Bariatric surgery is performed for patients who are obese. Weight loss is achieved by reducing the size of the stomach (Sleeve Gastrectomy) or by removing parts of and re-routing the intestines to a surgically created small stomach (Gastric Bypass). Metabolic surgery involves control of sugar by re-arranging segments of intestine to alter the glucose and insulin metabolism.
This is a highly specialized field where access to the abdomen is minimized to 3 or 4 small incisions.
